Explore Your Newspaper

Written for middle and high school students with learning differences, this comprehensive program includes lesson plans and activity sheets to help students learn about each section of a newspaper while they practice basic skills. Each lesson requires students to search through a newspaper to find an article, a headline, or other specified information. Students then complete a skills activity using the text or information located.

Lessons
Easy-to-follow lesson plans include objectives, materials needed, a group skills lesson, an individual or small-group practice activity, and an optional extension activity. Lessons cover specific sections of the newspaper and integrate basic skills, such as locating necessary information, identifying facts and opinions, learning to read charts and graphs, following a sequence when writing, finding action verbs in articles, placing information into categories, and identifying the meanings of abbreviations in classified ads.

Activity Sheets
A reproducible activity sheet accompanies each lesson. Every sheet requires students to either find or cut out information from a newspaper and use that text to complete the activity. Visual icons are included on each page, and directions are short and clear to help students who struggle with reading. Each activity is a natural follow-up to its lesson and provides practice in basic skills.

Newspaper Sections
Every major section of a newspaper is covered in the program. Each of the 9 units includes 5-20 lessons and reproducible activities.
Units
• Getting to Know the Newspaper
• Local, State, and World News
• Sports Articles and Scores
• Editorials and Letters to the Editor
• Cartoons, Television, and Movies
• The Classifieds

Assessments
The program includes an assessment checklist and a multiple-choice test. The assessment checklist provides a record of skills mastered by students throughout the program. The multiple-choice test reviews the purpose and content of each major section of the newspaper. It covers newspaper vocabulary, such as headline, subhead, article, editorial, classified advertisement, index, political cartoon, and caption.

Multiple Uses
This flexible program has been designed to use either as a complete newspaper exploration program or as a fun basic skills supplement to any unit. The sections and most of the lessons can be completed in any order. Several lessons are designed to build on each other and should be taught in the suggested order. An index of skills is provided so that teachers can easily locate lessons that reinforce specific skills.

Includes
Teacher's Binder with 100 lesson plans, 100 reproducible activity pages, an assessment, and an index of skills.
