Laureate's Goals and Objectives:

Twenty Categories may be used with both children and adults who
may have a variety of handicapping conditions. It is appropriate for
children with language-learning disabilities, as well as for adults
with Closed Head Trauma or Aphasia. Twenty Categories covers 300
nouns grouped into 20 categories. Three question formats are
offered: Category to Noun: Inclusion Find one that's a fruit. 1. a house 2. a banana 3. an ant Noun to Category: Inclusion What is a hotel? 1. a dwelling 2. an insect 3. a color Category to Noun: Exclusion Which one is not an insect? 1. an ant 2. a beetle 3. a lawyer Twenty Categories is designed for those beyond the initial stages of categorization learning. Laureate's First Categories program is intended for those who are beginning to learn category concepts and need to expand their vocabularies. Our choice of categories for this program was based on the assumption that users have already developed those covered in First Categories, i.e., animals, body parts, clothes, food, utensils, and vehicles. Goal 1: Student will demonstrate knowledge of the members of each category by completing Category to Noun: Inclusion testing with 90% accuracy. Select Testing from the Title Screen. Choose a category from the Categories Menu. Set Method to "Category to Noun" and Activity to "Inclusion" on the Parameters Menu.Objective 1: Student will demonstrate knowledge of the members of each category by completing Noun to Category: Inclusion training with 80% accuracy. Select Training from the Title Screen. Choose a category from the Categories Menu. Set Method to "Category to Noun" and Activity to "Inclusion" on the Parameters Menu. Set Criterion to 12/15.Objective 2: Repeat Objective #1 for the remaining 19 categories. Goal 2: Student will demonstrate knowledge of the members of each category by completing Noun to Category: Inclusion testing with 90% accuracy. Select Testing from the Title Screen. Once students have a firm knowledge of the exemplars included in each category, they can begin to make exclusionary judgments.
