Mix 'n Match: Sorting

Sorting Fun teaches the student to classify objects by shape and color. On the lower levels, the program can be set to be solved according to either shape or color, or may randomly alternate between shape and color. On the higher levels, the problems are solved by shape and color together.

On each level the program presents an object and several "bins". The student determines in which bin the object belongs and selects the matching number. The object is moved to the selected bin and the match/mismatch is demonstrated for the student. After 10 objects have been sorted, the program starts again with a new set of bins.

On the highest level, the "null set" (objects that don’t belong in any of the pictured bins) is represented by a trash can in the lower corner of the screen. If a match is not found for the object on the screen, the student presses "0" to try the trash can. If the student is correct, the object falls into the trash can. If not, the student is corrected and given another chance to find the correct match.

  Levels of Difficulty
Level 1

The student matches the color or shape presented. All bins have either the same color or the same shape, and the student uses the other determinant to sort the objects.

  Level 2

The student sorts objects of different shape by color or objects of different color by shape. The bins still have a single color or shape, but the objects to be sorted come in different colors and shapes.

  Level 3

The student must match both the color and the shape of the presented object. 3 different colors and 3 different shapes combine to provide 9 bins for sorting.

  Level 4

The student must match both the color and the shape of the presented object. The objects for which there is no match must be placed into the "null set".
