Mini Musical Monsters
Kindergarten - Grade 1, Inclusion
Nominated BETT 2006 Award
Create melodies, compose songs and even learn the
notes of popular tunes using Mini Musical Monsters! Mini Musical
Monsters contains six engaging musical activities for 3 - 5
year-olds. Children can have fun experimenting with music making,
rhythms and sound effects. Mini Musical Monsters is also ideal for
developing vital ICT skills and will quickly build confidence in
novice computer users - any mouse click or keyboard press will
produce interesting results! Mini Musical Monsters contains no
speech and does not require reading skills. It is a valuable
addition to an early years or foundation stage setting.
Activities include:
• Follow the Cloud: Karaoke for early learners! Click on the monster
under the cloud. As you follow the cloud you'll hear the notes of a
well-known tune. A different melody will play each time from a
library of 5.
• Monster Match: Encourage children to listen carefully and
discriminate between sounds. Match each sound made on the top row
with one of the monsters, first with visual help, then with sound
only as the monsters hide behind their curtains.
• Musical Garden: Click on any object in the garden to trigger off
strange and beautiful sounds and animations! Alternatively, any
keyboard press will set something off. Children soon learn to
combine objects to build shifting musical montages. A different
garden will appear each time from a library of 5.
• Monster Mixer: Children explore the individual parts within a
simple musical arrangement and how they relate to each other. Each
monster has a different, looping, part, which can be made louder or
softer by stretching it up or down. A different piece will be used
each time from a library of 5.
• Monster Grid: Make short tunes and rhythms by dragging the
monsters into the squares. Each monster plays a different instrument
sound. Ready-made tunes can be loaded by pressing keys 1 to 0. This
activity also serves as an easy introduction to Musical Monsters.
• Monster Scale: the monsters here represent the notes of an octave.
Click on them in turn or hold the mouse down and drag. You can
record a 'live' tune by pressing the record button, then playing the
monsters, and then the stop button. Your performance can then be
played back. A different instrument sound is used each time this
activity is selected.
• Clip Art Library: click on the button in the top right corner of
the Menu screen. All the images in the library can be printed both
in full color or line art, and in various sizes.
