Build & Read Software
Build and Read Software leads students to create words
using familiar patterns. With this interactive, activity-based software,
students focus on building words using common onsets and rimes. The
program is ideal for strengthening phonemic awareness, struggling
readers, and for those who need additional skill reinforcement. The
activities are simple, yet sophisticated, which enables students of
various ages and abilities to use and enjoy them.
HOW TO PLAY The Build and Read program
begins with an animation of a futuristic city. In order to construct
buildings, words must be created. The student chooses from one of five
construction zones that represent each of the five vowels: A, E, I, O,
U. Students build words by clicking on the correct onset that makes a
word with a given rime.
Over 650 words and 65 rimes are included, each ranging from three to
six letters. A set of rimes is randomly selected for each vowel. As the
student clicks on the correct onset, he or she hears the word pronounced
and receives affirmation. Once the building is complete, the student is
returned to the main menu and allowed to choose to work in another zone.
If the student does not meet 70% mastery, the building will not be
complete, and the student will be automatically returned to the main
menu. After the student has mastered all words in the construction zone,
the building becomes a reward screen with full animation. A final reward
screen is shown after mastering all five construction zones.
ASSESSMENT AND TEACHER OPTIONS An assessment and a
printout for each onset and rime are provided to help the teacher
determine mastery for each student. Teacher options allow for a variety
of adaptations, including selecting which zones the student will work in
and allowing for a background music option. All onsets and rimes have an
audio rollover to help reinforce the words.
