Stages of Switch Control | |
Symbol | Description |
1. Cause and Effect... This is often seen as the first level of switch operation: the student having developed an awareness of the relationship between their switch presses and the resulting reward. Some students grasp this immediately, others require more practice with the widest possible variety of switch activities. |
|
2. Switch Timing... Pressing the switch at the right time is a very big step in switch operation. It requires the motor and cognitive skills to operate the switch and an understanding of the task. Many of our software packages provide excellent ways of helping students to wait for the correct time to press their switch. |
|
3. Choosing with Switches... The next stage of switch control is choice making: allowing the selection of desired items. This involves a scanning process controlled by one or two switches. Development of this skill provides opportunities for students who use switches to access a much wider range of curriculum material. |
