Survival Signs Indoor Symbols Game

The Indoor and Outdoor Survival Signs Symbols Games, developed by PCI’s Janie Haugen-McLane, each teach 40 international symbols using an easy-to-play game format. Fun games allow students with limited reading skills to experience success as they build a functional understanding of survival signs. This understanding helps students travel safely and make informed decisions in their communities.

Students with limited or no reading skills may have a difficult time understanding the meaning of many community signs. By using only international symbols to teach common survival signs, these games allow students to explain the meanings of the symbols in their own words. For example, students may not be able to read “Beware of Dog,” but they can state that the snarling dog pictured on the sign may be dangerous so they should stay away from that dog.

Game Preparation
Before playing, students receive a two-page study guide with pictures of the 40 survival signs to review both in class and at home. The study guide has the international symbols and the words that are usually printed on each sign.

How the Games Work
Students place their playing pieces on the “Go” square of the game board. The first player rolls the 1-2-3 die and can move his or her playing piece in any direction. The player then looks at the number on the die again and refers to the question stand to see which question to answer. For example, a student who rolls a 2 must answer the number 2 question.

• Where might you see this sign?

Roll Again Squares
When a player lands on a corner square on the game board where a die is pictured, he or she gets to roll the die again.
