Series Design
With the Work Place Role-Play Series modules, your students will
truly experience the workplace. In order to simulate a realistic work site, the
author worked with actual companies to create entry-level employee tasks that
can be accomplished in the classroom. Each of the 5 modules includes:
Objectives, Teaching Suggestions, Actual Job Site Samples, a Task Overview,
Specific Task Instructions, and Answer Keys. Each module has reproducible
worksheets and can function independently from the others.
Each module available individually (see below).

TASK #6 Problem Solving
Directions: Offer a solution to
each "Possible Park District Situation."
Try to be fair and logical when making judgments
and choosing priorities.
Possible Park District Situation #1:
You are selling pool passes alone at the pool starting
Monday at 1:00 PM. The first 150 passes include a $10.00 gift certificate at the snack
bar. At 1:00, there are over 200 people in line. The tenth person in line wants to buy 142
passes for a day care. The people in line who hear this become very angry and vocal.
They insist that you cannot give this person all the remaining free passes. What are you
going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #2:
It is your job to both schedule and cancel softball
games. On Tuesday, it rained from early morning until about 2:00 PM at which time you
called the night's games off. At about 5:30, the sun came out and the night began to look
promising. In your opinion, the diamonds were still unplayable. However, "Jim" phones
you and calls you several foul names because you have cancelled the games, and it is a
lovely evening. What are you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #3:
You are working with a partner who takes a cigarette
break every five minutes when there is no supervisor around. You do not like working
with her because the two of you never get as much done as you should, and the supervisor
is always asking why you are so slow. You do not want to be a tattletale. What are
you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #4:
You overheard your superior talking about firing one
of your friends because he has been stealing tools from the shop. You know your friend
would stop stealing if he had any idea they were onto him. You believe your friend is
really a good guy who simply needs some guidance so you would like him to get another
chance. What are you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #5:
You love to play golf, but you cannot afford a golf pass.
A friend of yours works in the office. She has access to all the season tickets. She gives
you a birthday card with a season golf pass tucked inside. You really want the pass, but
you are sure she has taken the pass without paying because she does not have the money
to give you such an expensive birthday gift. What are you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #6:
You are a lifeguard. Your boyfriend comes to the pool
every day and spends a lot of time by your chair trying to talk to you. You are afraid you
will lose your job if you talk to him; and you are afraid you will lose your boyfriend if you
don't talk to him. What are you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #7:
You have been working for the Park District maintenance
department for two years. When you started, you were assured that your allergy to
paint would not be an issue because there were many other things you could do. A
month ago, a new maintenance supervisor was hired. She insists that all employees will
be required to paint for the first two weeks in May. What are you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #8:
You are mowing lawn in Taylor Park when you fmd a
large bundle of cash--about $2000.00. You are totally alone. What are you going to do?
Possible Park District Situation #9:
You work for the park district. On your day off, you
are on a picnic with your family when you notice a group of young kids who are breaking
picnic tables. What are you going to say and/or do?
Possible Park District Situation #10:
You have built a new garage. You work for the park
district and you really like the color of paint you have been using at work for the picnic
tables so you bought the same color to use on your garage. Your supervisor called you
into the office and asked you where you got the paint for your garage. How do you feel
about his question? What are you going to say?
